Sis, let’s talk about something we don’t hear enough: how menopause shifts the way we see ourselves in the mirror, especially as Black women.

This week, Essence magazine highlighted the unique challenges Black women face when it comes to menopause and beauty. While mainstream beauty campaigns are just now waking up to the idea that women over 40 still matter, many of us have been living in the shadows — feeling invisible, dismissed, or pressured to “keep up” with standards that don’t reflect who we are.

✨ What Essence Got Right

  • Visibility Matters: Black women in midlife often feel ignored by the beauty industry. Essence is reminding the world that we are here, aging gracefully, and deserve representation.

  • Beauty Isn’t Skin-Deep: Menopause impacts hair, skin, and body — but also confidence, self-image, and how society values us.

  • Reclaiming the Narrative: By centering Black women’s stories, this article pushes back against a culture that wants us to shrink when we should be shining.

My Reflection

Menopause isn’t just hot flashes and sleepless nights. It’s a whole-body, whole-life transition. For many of us, it’s also about shedding what the world told us was “beautiful” and rediscovering beauty on our own terms.

So here’s my question for you, sis:When did you first realize beauty after 40 isn’t about fitting in — it’s about standing out?

Drop your thoughts in the comments. Let’s start a conversation that reminds every woman reading this: you are still radiant, still worthy, and still evolving.
